The begin of WWI is widely known, only few people but know, what was begin of Field Post of Austro-Hungarian Imperial Army. Let´s go back to the hot summer days of 1914. On July 28, 1914 the Austrian Emperor declared war on Serbia and on July 31 the mobilisation for men born in 1893 and 1882-1889 .

August 1, 1914 is the day, when the Austro-Hungarian Field Post started its service. By the date, the correspondence was sent through civil post offices and normal postage was required. The field post worked in provisional conditions, in halft of August the first definitive field post cancels were delivered to the first of them.

Bellow you can see a card sent by a Czech soldier from Mladá Boleslav (Jungbunzlau) on August 1, 1914. It seems it is his first message sent through the field post, he made error in writing of the word “Feldpost” (=field post), because he wrote “Feldposten” , which means in military German language position or sentry.

I would propose to the Readers of our bulletin creation of following evidences :

It would be useful to look for such exceptional material from early period of Austro-Hungarian field post, which value can be fixed first after quantification of number of existing cards/letters.

When you have such material, please don´t hesitate to contact the Editor of this bulletin or the Author of the article (lubor.kunc@seznam.cz ) . Thank you !
