It is not widely known, that after establishing of independent Czechoslovak Republic the Austro-Hungarian Field Post System on its territory yet worked. But it was really so !

On October 28, 1918 the fighting continued on some lines of battles. However some territories left Austro-Hungarian Monarchy for their independent states (like Bohemia), thanks to the fighting the field post system should work by Nov. 3, 1918, when the fighting on last Italian line of battle was stopped. In the period Oct. 28 - Nov. 3, 1918 it was possible on the Czechoslovak territory to send mail to the soldiers being in battle areas and/or to receive mail from such areas via the field post system. On the territory some stations were situated, e.g. Field Post Sorting Office in Prague.

One of the existing entires you can see on bellow picture. It shows a card sent by a Czech artillery man taking part in fighting on Italian line of battle (in the Tirol area) on Oct. 29, 1918. The cancel “Zur beförderung geeignet” means the card has been censored and approved for delivery. The other cancel “Von Armee im Felde” (= from army at battle field) shows, that sender´s mil. unit was located in the part of line of battle, where no field post offices were avaiable and the card should be canceled later, when it reaches a field post office.

I would like to suggest a creation of an evidence of entires sent in period Oct. 28 - Nov. 3, 1918 from Czechoslovakia to the lines of battle or in opposite direction via Austro-Hungarian field post system to the Readers. When you find such entires, please be so kind to drop a line to me (lubor.kunc@seznam.cz). Thank you and good luck in your searching !
